Yamato Japanese Taiko Drummers
Wednesday, October 17, 8:00p
Get
ready for an evening of breathtaking
entertainment! Since its formation almost a decade
ago, Yamato has played to more than a million people,
giving over 1000 performances in about a dozen different
countries, and yet their enthusiasm remains
intact. The group continues to travel
with several dozen large and small drums(including an
O-daiko made from a huge tree over 400 years old),
displaying the instruments’ versatility and instinctive
appeal, both in impromptu street performances and in
concert halls holding several thousand
people.
Not
dance exactly, not music precisely, not spectacle
solely, Japan's Yamato Drummers are a combination of all
three. They fill the stage with huge, beautiful
drums and beat seven bells out of them, at an
unrelenting decibel level and with phenomenal skill,
applying ferocity somewhere between the seriousness of
samurai and the crazed exhibitionism of heavy-metal rock
drummers.

Red Priest
Monday, October 29, 8:00p
Tuesday, October 30,
8:00p
If you don't think you like chamber
music, then you must see Red Priest. The group has
been accused of blending classical music with a
"Guinness soaked folk session in an Irish bar."
Red Priest is one of the
major success stories on the international Early Music
scene today. Named after the flame-haired priest,
Antonio Vivaldi, this extraordinary English ensemble has
re-defined the art of baroque music performance,
combining the fruits of extensive research with
swashbuckling virtuosity, creative recomposition,
heart-on-sleeve emotion and compelling stagecraft. The
group performs largely from memory, allowing an operatic
level of freedom and interaction, and its highly
imaginative programs are drawn from myriad baroque
sources to create a kaleidoscopic range of moods and
colors.
International music
critics have described the Red Priest style as
'electrifying', 'sheer daring', 'immaculately forged',
'sonically supercharged', 'brilliant and inspired',
'deliciously twisted'… - but the group's extravagantly
baroque ethos is perhaps best summed up in the words of
English musicologist and broadcaster George Pratt:
"If nobody goes over the top, how will we know wht lies
on the other side?"

Rastrelli Cello Quartet
Tuesday, March 4, 8:00p
Wednesday, March 5,
8:00p
Each of these
exceptional young musicians learned to say "cello"
before he'd learned to say his own name. However, since
founding the quartet in Stuttgart in 2002 they have
started to forget the name of their instrument, as they
have intentionally omitted from their
repertoire any pieces composed especially for cello
quartet, concentrating instead on the widest range of
classical, pop, and jazz. A
Rastrelli program is as likely to contain Gershwin,
Bernstein, Brubeck, and Leroy Anderson as it is Bach,
Dvorak, Tschaikowsky, and Rachmaninov.

The
Actors' Gang
1984
Tuesday, April 8, 8:00p
Wednesday, April 9, 8:00p
Thursday, April
10, 8:00p
Contact Choregus
Productions for information regarding a special school
performance on Thursday, April 10.
In 1982, award winning actor and director Tim
Robbins co-founded the Actors’ Gang, the highly
acclaimed and respected Los Angeles theatre ensemble
dedicated to the production of wild, original and
provocative theatre. The Actors' Gang is one of
Los Angeles' most enduring theatre ensembles. Founded in
1981 by a group of renegade theatre artists, the Gang's
mission is to create bold, original works for the stage
and daring reinterpretations of the classics. The
company's work is raw, immediate, and crafted with
the highest artistic standards.
1984, George
Orwell's terrifying vision of the totalitarian state, is
one of the landmarks of 20th century literature. Fifty
years after 1984 was first published, it is depressing
to see how much of Orwell's satire has become
uncomfortably real. Our politicians speak fluent
Newspeak and in the Big Brother "reality" series, people
prostitute their privacy for mass
entertainment.
This
adaptation of Orwell's novel by this Los Angeles company
plays down the surveillance aspect in favour of
suggesting analogies to current political dynamics and
identities.

Time for Three
(tf3)
Tuesday, May 6, 8:00p
Tuesday, May 7,
8:00p
If "tuxedos and stiff shirts" comes
to mind when you think of a string trio, then it's
Time for Three. tf3 is increasingly
gaining attention as one of America's brightest, most
unique ensembles. Founded in 2001 by three Curtis
Institute of Music students intent on exploring
repertoire that stretches beyond the limits of
convention, the trio continues to dazzle audiences with
its eclectic mix of bluegrass, Hungarian gypsy, jazz,
country-western fiddling, classical, and improvisatory
music. Its youthful, engaging performances are free of
conventional performance practice and instead draw from
each member's different musical background, "blurr(ing)
genres" as writes David Patrick Stearns of The
Philadelphia Inquirer. The trio also
performs its own arrangements of traditional repertoire
and Mr. Meyer provides original compositions to further
complement its offerings. tf3 comes to Tulsa after
a stunning appearance at the Newport Music Festival
during the summer of 2007.
